Although*though*even though * In spite of*despite

Essas palavras costumam causar grandes transtornos a quem está aprendendo Inglês, dúvidas de quando se deve usar uma ou outra. Antes de verificarmos o uso delas, quero dizer que elas não se diferem pelo significado em si mas sim pela estrutura da frase onde serão usadas. Como em português nós dizemos:

• Embora ele tenha dinheiro, ele não comprou um carro.
• Apesar de ter dinheiro, ele não comprou um carro.
• Ainda que/mesmo que ele tenha dinheiro, ele não comprará um carro.(+ enfático)

Notem que a idéia é a mesma nas três sentenças, somente a estrutura muda.

Vamos ao Inglês.......

• Although it rained, I enjoyed the party.
• In spite of the rain, I enjoyed the party.
• Despite the rain, I enjoyed te party.

Although sempre vem seguido do sujeito + verbo. (.....it rained.....);

In spite of e despite sempre seguido por um substantivo ou um pronome(this,that,what, etc) ou ing; despite(sem of); o significado é o mesmo.

Veja abaixo mais alguns exemplos e observe a estrutura:

• In spite of the traffic, I didn't arrive late.
• Despite the traffic, I didn't arrive late.
• Although the traffic was bad, I didn't arrive late.(não "in spite of the traffic was bad")
• I couldn't travel although I had money.
• I couldn't travel despite having money.(não "despite I had money)
• In spite of having money, I couldn't travel.

Pode-se usar também: In spit of the fact (that).....and despite the fact (that).....

• She didn't get the job in spite of the fact (that) she had all the qualifications.
• She didn't get the job despite the fact (that) she had all the qualifications.

As vezes usamos though no lugar de although:

• She didn't get the job although/though she had all the qualifications.

Podemos usar though no final da frase(inglês falado):

• The day was not very warm. I went outside though( = but I went outside)

Even though é uma forma mais acentuada de although:

• Even though I had money, I couldn't travel.
