to make a fool of yourself, mas tem uma outra:

to show yourself up

She didn't talk a lot at the meeting for not making a fool of herself in front of the others.(Ela não falou muito na reunião para não queimar o seu filme na frente dos outros).

John was afraid he would show himself up at the party, but he sings very well.(John estava com medo de que queimaria seu filme na festa, mas ele canta muito bem.)
